June 1 All Chapter Social at Maynard’s in Excelsior

An email invitation will be sent to members and past Chapter visitors the first part of May via EventBrite.

Fall All Chapter Speaker Event

I am working out the details for our Fall All Chapter event. National motivational speaker Janie Jasin has agreed to speak to our group and bring along her singing partner Chez as they talk about Traditions…also the title of their new book. I am waiting for information from Sovereign Estate Wine on the North shore of Lake Waconia as the location. Janie and Chez will speak for about 45 minutes, then we will do wine tasting. I am planning on a 3-5pm time frame so we don’t have client appointments after our meeting. When I get confirmation from the winery, I will let everyone know. We are looking at early October.

“Age appears to be best in four things; old wood best to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust, and old authors to read.” ~ Fancis Bacon

Why do they complain?

If you are on Facebook, chances are, you have read a post about someone complaining. Why do they complain on Facebook? Why not connect with the person or business that’s causing the issue?

Many times people complain to the wrong people, we are all guilty of doing at one time or another. But if you think about it, it’s really a waste of energy isn’t it? Now maybe you feel better “venting” to a friend, I get it. But when we vent we arn’t expecting results, we are reducing stress.

Have you had a customer or client complain to you lately? What did you do? Chances are you solved their problem and, most likely, took another step to make them happy. When something goes wrong, that’s your opportunity to set it straight and go “above and beyond” to make your customer happy. I know people in business who love it when something out of their control goes awry because it allows them the opportunity to get it fixed and usually leads to a glowing testimonial or a referral.

They next time you have a complaint about a product or service, let the provider know that you are offering them an “opportunity” to make it right. Don’t settle for less. If you got a new dryer and they installed the door on backwards, don’t settle, make sure they correct their mistake. If you placed an ad in a publication and there was a typo, insist in a reprint of the corrected ad. You have the right to be a satisfied customer too. You just have to ask.

Welcome New Members to the Chanhassen Chapter

Please join me in welcoming these new members! Connect with them on LinkedIn! Abby Ellis of Seven Hills Benefit Partners and Barb Pabst, Massage Therapist at ABC Family Chiropractic. Barb has also volunteered to be the Membership Coordinator for the Chanhassen Chapter. Thank you Barb and welcome to both of you!

The Waconia Chapter is looking for new Members too! Consider attending their April meeting as a visitor or refer a friend. Contact their Leadership Team for meeting details. They meet the 2nd Thursday of the month from 11:15 to 12:45pm.

What’s the state of YOUR Economy?

I keep hearing members say they are “Crazy Busy”. Are you? How’s your business going? People tend to have an awakening when the weather warms up and they can go outside more. We’ve had such an early spring this year and it seems like it’s helping our businesses. If you aren’t “swamped” with calls, emails, texts and new client meetings, what can you do?

Activity Breeds Activity.

Reach out to your past clients, current clients and prospects. Call them, send a text or email, write them a note, make a post on their Facebook page. By simply making contact, you become top of mind.

Let them know you are looking for more of your “ideal client”. Don’t be afraid to ASK for referrals. Don’t wait for your ship to come in, you have to swim out to it sometimes.

Review your contacts and pick out 5 well connected people, people you know would refer you, start with them. Tomorrow pick 5 more. Make your contact with them personal, not like a generic form letter or scripted call. Yuck. Be genuine. What you think about you bring about. Call them and you will receive calls. The hardest part is starting so right now go to your calendar. Carve out an hour today and an hour tomorrow to reach out. Continue into next week to keep up the momentum. Mark it on your calendar and stick to the commitment. Before you know it, you will be “crazy busy” too! Share your success at the next WIN meeting!

Share with us on Facebook!

You can make posts on the Women in Networking Facebook page about your upcoming events. Here’s the link. Take advantage of this marketing tool to get your message out! If you have a need or a question, post it on the page and Members will reply.

“It’s easy to make a buck. It’s a lot tougher to make a difference.” – Tom Brokaw

How Do YOU Make A Difference?

As professional women, we have the opportunity to make a difference. Everyone works best when they discover their life’s purpose and find a way to make a living doing it. Are you happy with your business? Your career path? Your daily “to-do’s”? I bet the majority of you will say YES. Women in Networking tends to attract professional, confident, focused women. Many of us have been in the same field of work for years, because we LOVE it!

YOU make a difference when you come to Women in Networking each month. When you share about your business and listen to others. You make a difference when you share a testimonial or a referral or a piece of advice.

YOU make a difference when you volunteer to be a part of the Leadership Team.

YOU make difference when you facilitate the brainstorming topic.

YOU make a difference when you introduce another woman to Women in Networking.

YOU are appreciated! And just think, that’s what you do for WIN, what else do you do for your own business, your family, your friends. Everything we do DOES make a difference and its important to the lives of others.

Thanks for choosing to be a part of Women in Networking. YOU ROCK!

Facebook Tip – Like a Business as your Business

Do you know how to have your business “like” another member’s Business Page on Facebook?

If you are an administrator of your page, then log in to your personal Facebook Account.

Click on HOME at the top right.

On the left, under PAGES, choose your business page.

On the right side under ADMIN, do you see how you can click on “Use Facebook as (Your Business Page)”

Click on that link. The blue bar at the top will now display the image from your Business Page, not your personal page. You are now wearing the hat of your business. Now SEARCH for a fellow member’s business page or the Women in Networking (WIN) page. When you find it, click LIKE. Now your BUSINESS like’s their page. You can also make a post on their page, send a referral or give a testimonial.

You will keep this “hat” on until you turn it off by clicking on the same link you used to turn it on. It will now say “Use Facebook as (Your Name)”.

It’s Leap Day – February 29!

Are you going to do something different today because it’s Leap Day? How about trying something new?

Let us know if you did something special on this “extra day” this year. Make your comments below or share on Facebook!

Marketing is About Relationships

Marketing your business can be challenging, I know. You have lots of options to choose from, all promising different results. In this time of technology and social media, let’s not forget something very simple and very important. Do your clients like YOU?

Marketing is based on building relationships and friendships–on helping other people. When you orient your business on serving your clients, you are more successful. Improve your relationships with your customers and you will increase your business. Your best marketing is a personal approach. It’s an honest approach that reflects your personality.

As long as you are good at what you do and maintain your relationships, you will be successful. Think about it, most of your clients probably aren’t knowledgeable enough to really judge your competence. So they make decisions based on your relationship with them, how you treat them, and how comfortable they feel with you.

What if we did something the old fashion way. Can you find five note cards, five stamps and the address of your five favorite clients? I know, I’m asking a lot. Now, can you find 25 minutes? Write each one a brief note of appreciation. Be thankful from the bottom of your heart. It is February after all. Send out the five notes, then smile. You just did an important marketing task that will come back to you.

“You can’t cross a sea by merely staring into the water.” — Rabindranath Tagore

Every month we post The Networking Minute Newsletter on the website, we add our new member’s profiles and we keep the calendar up-to-date. We make posts on our Facebook page and check in on the official Women in Networking LinkedIn group. All of this takes time and energy, but it’s paying off.

Several of the guests to our various Chapters have found us online. They are searching for something different. A new way to network with women professionals. They are seeking a supportive environment where they can get answers to common questions about their business.

Thanks to everyone for sharing Women in Networking with the friends you know on Facebook, your LinkedIn contacts and if you can place a link to Women in Networking on your business website, we appreciate that too!

Word is spreading about Women in Networking and it’s exciting to be a part of it!

If you have questions or comments about Women in Networking, you can make a comment on this post, connect with us on Facebook or send an email to Michelle.

What’s Are Your Strengths?

Are you clear on what your strengths are? Do you focus on your strengths in your business? Did you know that the more you work in the arena of your strengths the happier you will be? Can you identify other WIN member’s strengths?

Have you had one of those days when you are working on tasks you don’t like to do and you get frustrated? When that happens to me, I seem to always turn to one task to make me “feel better”. I work on a newsletter. I love newsletters. I love creating the content, designing the layout, working with others on communication. I work on newsletters because it allows me to use many of my identified strengths.

I have taken Gallup’s StrengthsFinder.com profile to learn my top 5 Strengths.

Have you taken the profile? I posted a poll question on LinkedIn, let me know if you have taken it. Go to LinkedIn. Login in and go to the Women in Networking group and see the discussion. If you are not a member of our Women in Networking group, email me and I can invite you. It’s just for WIN members.

Anyway, there are several books about the profile you can check out like Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath

or

Now, Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham & Donald Clifton

Knowing your strengths can help you determine when it’s time to outsource tasks or hire an assistant. The point of the assessment is to bring your strengths to light and your career path should allow you to use your strengths. When you are using your strengths, you are happier and will find greater fulfillment from your business. It applies to your personal life as well.

There are 34 themes of StrengthsFinder. Some refer to the person, some a category, others a quality. Here’s a list of the themes.

Achiever, Activator, Adaptability
Analytical, Arranger, Belief, Command
Communication, Competition
Connectedness, Context, Deliberative
Developer, Discipline, Empathy
Fairness, Focus, Futuristic, Harmony
Ideation, Inclusiveness, Individualization
Input, Intellection, Learner
Maximizer, Positivity, Relator
Responsibility, Restorative, Self-Assurance
Significance, Strategic, Woo

For now, I just wanted to introduce you to the concept of knowing your strengths. Based on the poll results, we might consider a special segment in Women in Networking about knowing your strengths and learning the strengths of follow members. If you have thoughts or ideas, please email me.

“Success follows doing what you want to do. There is no other way to be successful. ~Malcolm Forbes, publisher of Forbes magazine

Books We Love

Now is a great time to highlight the Books We Love page of the WIN website too. It lists books Members have read and would recommend. Many of the titles have the Members name next to it. Contact them with questions. If you would like to add a book to the list, please email me. I made a post about the Books page on our Women in Networking (WIN) Facebook page too. If you aren’t a fan of Women in Networking on Facebook please click the link and “like” WIN. You can post your recommended books there too!

Renewals

I believe we have most everyone’s dues renewals complete. If you have not renewed online or mailed a check, please got to the Dues Renewal Page for more information.

How to make the most of your Women in Networking Experience

There is a new page on the Women in Networking website called the WIN Experience. It explains how to get the most out of your Women in Networking experience. It’s a must-read tool for current and new members! Please review this page after you have finished reading the newsletter!

What’s New for 2012?

The meeting dates will be published on the calendar on our website. We also post social events there and All Chapter Events.

Our next All Chapter Event is a speaker, Deb Brown from Time Creators. Our topic will be time management. Guaranteed to be a winner topic, aren’t we all looking for more hours in the day? The date is set for Thursday, March 15th, location to be determined.
“The world is entering a new time zone, and one of the most difficult adjustments people must make is in their fundamental concepts and beliefs about the management of time.” ~Dan Sullivan, founder and president of The Strategic Coach

Thankful for Women in Networking

I’d like to say that I am very thankful for the women that I have met that make up Women in Networking. I am so proud to be part of such a professional and valuable organization. I know members join, and renew their membership, for many reasons. I look forward to attending every monthly meeting and the All Chapter Events.

We donated 33 pounds of food and personal care items to Bountiful Basket Food Shelf, part of the CAP Agency, serving Eastern Carver County. The drop off was a tearful experience seeing so many in need. Thanks a million for your donations at our December All Chapter Potluck! (See potluck photos on Facebook)

My passion is to connect women professionals so they can have a resource to tap into to help grow their business. That’s what Women in Networking is all about. Like our mission statement says, we share successful techniques, systems, products and services with one another. We are such a wealth of information as a collective group. We are unstoppable!

Thank you for your membership, thank for your pride in Women in Networking. It is much appreciated.

Upcoming Chapters

A visitor to the Delano Chapter has since moved to Cottage Grove and is interested in starting a Women in Networking Chapter in Cottage Grove. Her name is Emily and she in the wellness industry. She is new to the area and is looking to know other business professionals. She’d like our help to get her started.

We also started a Chanhassen Chapter for Women in Networking being lead by Tracey Rust and Dr. Amber Miller from our Chaska Chapter.

If you know someone who might be interested in joining one of these new Chapters, please contact Tracey or Amber directly or Michelle Aspelin for the Cottage Grove area Chapter. If your organization has offices in Cottage Grove, please consider contacting them and telling them about Women in Networking. It they might be interested in joining, have them call or email Michelle. We will also put the requests out on LinkedIn and Facebook.

We may also be starting a Lake Minnetonka Chapter, let me know if you could refer anyone to that Chapter as well.

Chapter Transfers

If you are interested in transferring to another Chapter, contact the Membership Coordinator for the Chapter you’d like to transfer to. Fill out an application and submit. Or, you can ask me to email your original WIN application to the Membership Coordinator. Transfers are reviewed just like a new member. You will be notified by the new Chapter of your acceptance and they will notify me. I will move your profile from your current Chapter to your new Chapter on the WIN website. Dues are not effected by a Chapter Transfer.

Effective social media can help you grow you business many ways. One way is by converting your existing customers into fans on your Business Facebook Page which allows you to stay in front of them to drive repeat business. Another is through Facebook ads, one of the most highly-targeted and effective ad networks. When you place an ad on Facebook, you have control over the demographics and your budget. You can set daily spending limits, run your campaign for a certain time period and choose the demographics that fit your ideal client. Facebook ads link.

Update -

We’ve had in increase in guests lately attending the Victoria/Chanhassen Chapter, partly as a result of the popular All Chapter Event called High Energy High Results Power Hour of Networking. It really showcased what WIN is all about with lots of networking exercises and it got a lot of women excited to join WIN. Because of the growth of the Victoria/Chanhassen Chapter this past year and these new prospective members, we have decided to put a cap of 25 members for any WIN Chapter so we can effectively maintain our current WIN agenda format. I will update the website and WIN booklet to reflect this change. As Dr. Becky from ABC Family Chiropractic said, “It’s a good problem to have.”

POTENTIAL NEW CHAPTERS

Chanhassen and Lake Minnetonka

We are seeking interested women for 2 new Chapters, one called Chanhassen and one called Lake Minnetonka. Anyone can transfer their membership to a different Chapter anytime, per the membership booklet.

See page on this website called Start a New Chapter and Leadership Team Descriptions for more information.

Annual Membership dues are $45 and are due by the end of January. If you decide to transfer to a new Chapter, let me know in December before I send out the renewal notices. To transfer, you submit an application to the Membership Leader for that Chapter.

The Victoria/Chanhassen Chapter also came up with this list of suggestions for their Chapter as well as WIN as a whole. The suggestions will be considered by the Leadership Teams and myself. If you have more to add, please contact me.

Quarterly All Chapter meetings (instead of 2 times a year, make it 4 times a year).

Review locations for the meetings to accommodate 20-25 attendees so all can hear and see one another.

Michelle provide “Leadership Training” for all incoming members of the Leadership Team for All Chapters.

Ask each Chapter to submit a 6 month calendar of meeting dates and brainstorming topics in December for Jan-June and by April for July-December.

Use an official timer device (cell phone) for the 60 second commercials and 5 minute commercials so we can stay on target for the entire agenda every meeting.

Reminder, you may visit another Chapter anytime, keep visits to 3-4 per year per visiting Chapter.

A reminder that attendance is expected at least 75% of the time, so 9 out of the 12 monthly meetings. If you cannot attend, you can send a sub from your organization, or ask another woman in business to attend as a guest.

If you have more suggestions, feel free to connect with me or any WIN Chapter Leader. All current Chapter Leadership teams are listed on the Contact page.

Michelle Aspelin
